The Evils of Sugar

Sugar is added to almost all of the foods we eat, sugar is addictive which is why it is added to the foods we consume. So that the corporate world can sell more products in spite of the fact that it causes untold problems on our bodies. We need to take it upon ourselves to remove it from our personal diets, not an easy task! However it can be done and has been done many times before. Over many years I have weaned off sugar only to fall back into the addiction after a week moment, but every time I pick myself back up and try again because it is so important for a healthy life, now and in my golden years. Watching my friends and family falling into diseases caused by and enhanced by sugar is enough for me to not fall in to the sugar trap. In this article I have given information on some of the basic problems sugar causes, names that sugar is called by and why not to use sugar substitutes. They can be worse that the real thing, why not just remove it all together?

Diabetes and Heart Disease

Diabetes is not just about blood sugars It is also about triglycerides, and lipid levels. Long-time use of a high-sugar diet drives resistances to insulin, a hormone formed by the pancreas which controls blood sugar levels. When you have diabetes, the consuming of sugar will raise the levels in your blood and the triglycerides which is a risk factor of heart disease. Triglycerides are a type of fat in blood, if someone has diabetes the problem is they either are not making insulin or are resistant to insulin.

Sugar is very calorie-dense so it is easy to consume large amounts by drinking soft drinks and in all types of food that contain added sugar that displaces nutritious foods out of your diet. Added sugars place you at a risk for a poor lipids profile: Higher triglycerides, lower HDL which is the good cholesterol and higher LDL levels that are the bad cholesterol in the blood. A poor lipid profile raisers the threat of coronary heart disease. Weight gain is also linked to a high risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancers. Added sugars can increase the risk of high blood pressure and inflammation, it has been found that inflammation is not good for our hearts. A study of more than 30,000 people found people who consumed 17–21% of calories from added sugar had a 38% higher danger of dying from heart disease.

Acne

Numerous population studies have shown that in rural areas consuming traditional, non-processed foods have almost a non-existent rate of acne in those society’s, in comparison to the cities Sugary foods rapidly raise blood sugar and insulin levels, producing increased androgen secretion, oil production and inflammation, that play a part in acne development. A study of 2,300 teenagers established that those who regularly consumed added sugar had around 30% greater risk of developing acne.

Cancer

Eating excessive quantities of sugar can increase your risk of developing certain cancers. Diets that are high in sugar increase inflammation in your body and may cause insulin resistance, also  increasing your cancer risk. In a study of more than 430,000 people it was indicated that with added sugar consumption there was shows a positive association with an increased risk of oesophageal cancer, pleural cancer and cancer of the small intestine. Another study revealed that women who consumed sweet buns and cookies more than 3 times a week are 1.42 times more likely to develop endometrial cancer than women who consumed these foods less than 0.5 times per week.
